2020 Gahanna Fall Open Cancelled. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
August 02, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we must cancel this year's Gahanna Fall Open (GFO). We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Central Ohio and based on guidance from the City of Gahanna Department of Parks and Recreation, we felt that it was in the best interests for the safety of our youth players, coaches, officials, and families to cancel this year's tournament.
This is not a decision we have taken lightly and there were multiple factors influencing the decision. The primary reasons were the decisions by multiple local school districts to voluntarily suspend their fall extra-curricular activities and the recently extended Director's Order from the Ohio Department of Health mandating fairly strict requirements for inter-team contact sports competitions and tournaments. We felt that some of the mandates would create a burden for teams that they would not be able to overcome. With no guarantee that the mandates would be lifted in time for competition, we ultimately decided that it was in the best interests of the teams for us to cancel the GFO now so that they would have adequate time to find alternative events before their registration deadlines pass.
We realize that this is a disappointment for all involved; particularly with the GFO being one of the few early season tournaments geared toward teams that prefer to compete in low-to-mid tier competitions. We strive to make the tournament an enjoyable experience for all our teams and their families and deeply regret that we will not be able to do that this fall.
Based on feedback we have received in past years, we are currently considering a spring tournament beginning in 2021. The tournament would be intended for the same tier of teams as the GFO; possibly expanding to have recreational divisions as well. We already have support for an event from Gahanna Parks and Rec and a decision will ultimately be based on the status of COVID-19 in Ohio over the next few months.
In closing, I want to thank you all again for your interest in the 2020 Gahanna Fall Open. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Gahanna Soccer Association and all the staff of the Gahanna Fall Open, I wish you all the best in the upcoming fall season and hope to see you all in the spring, or next fall.
